Chandigarh: After Supreme Court’s stay on Punjab and Haryana high court order on MD/MS admission in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), the college has invited fresh applications for the 64 seats under UT and institutional pool. While no specific schedule has been fixed for course counselling, the dates are likely to be announced once Lok Sabha elections get over.
Candidates securing below 50 percentile (general category) and 40 percentile (SC category) who had already applied till April 1, need not register for counselling.
“As the application process for the MD/MS seats will start afresh, only the eligible candidates as per the revised percentile can apply. This is for the 64 seats of the institution and UT pool and also the remaining vacant all India seats,” said a GMCH official.
After the high court had termed the Chandigarh pool invalid, the UT administration on April 30 had filed a petition in the Apex Court to gain clarity on what would happen to the 32 seats which was under the UT quota.
There are a total of 128 MD/MS seats in GMCH out of which 50% of these seats are under all India category, while the remaining 64 were equally divided between the UT and institutional quota until last year. However, the same was challenged this time.
The MD/MS admission was under high court scanner last year as well when a writ petition was filed challenging the 100% reservation under the UT pool.
The applicant had moved the Supreme Court where it was decided to equally divide the MD/MS seats between the institutional quota and UT pool.
The first counselling for MD/MS admission was held on April 5. However, after the UT pool’s validity was challenged in the high court, the counselling was set aside.
