JAIPUR: In a move to benefit patients, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has recognised 17 non-teaching hospitals for compulsory rotatory internship in the state.
The MCI recognition of 17 non-teaching hospitals will help the students to move out from medical colleges and gain experience in district hospitals. These MBBS students will take care of patients in district hospitals at a time when healthcare facility is reeling under shortage of doctors.

Department of medical education has issued a circular to all government-run medical colleges, informing them about recognition of non-teaching hospitals authorised by MCI for compulsory rotatory internship for MBBS and BDS students, completing their degrees from state medical colleges.
The MCI has recognized at least 17 non-teaching hospitals for compulsory rotatory internship. According to the circular, “Student completing MBBS from SMS Medical College will now be able to do his internship at Sadat Hospital of Tonk, General Hospital of Alwar, Government Hospital, Karauli and Government Hospital, Sawai Madhopur.”
MBBS students studying in Ajmer Medical College, will now be able to do rotatory internship from AK Hospital, Beawar and District Hospital, Nagaur. Medical College, Kota students have options in General Hospital, Bundi and Maternity Hospital, Bundi for rotatory internship.
“According to MCI, every candidate will be required after passing the final MBBS examination, to undergo compulsory rotational internship to the satisfaction of the college authorities and university concerned, for a period of 12 months, so as to be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and full registration,” said an official of Sawai Man Singh Medical College.
He said that the student has to complete at least three months of rotatory internship from non-teaching hospitals.
The official said that the rotatory internship helps the MBBS and BDS students, as it provides them hands-on experience and also encourages them to take full responsibility of patient’s care, along with skill acquisition. Internship also encourages students to utilize clinical facilities available in District Hospital, Taluka Hospital, Community Health Centre and Primary Health Centre.
