The coronavirus pandemic is claiming hundreds of lives every day in India, with the overall number of cases going past 43 lakh. While the health authorities have termed those above the age of 55 in the high-risk category when it comes to virus infections, a 29-year-old doctor also succumbed to the disease in Karnataka's Kunigal in Tumakuru district.

As per a report in the Times of India, the doctor placed on Covid duty was named Dr. Devraj. He had done his masters from the United Kingdom and was an expert in communicable diseases. He had contracted the virus 10 days before and had been in home isolation.

He complained of fatigue and was then brought to the hospital where his oxygen saturation was found to be 65%.

“We had all the equipment to treat him including a ventilator and high flow nasal oxygen support. But his condition required expert care. We suggested he be shifted to a better centre at the earliest," recalled a colleague of Dr Devaraj.

When the doctor's condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Tumakuru district hospital around midnight but the medical staff there declared him dead when he was brought. “We lost a young doctor who was committed to rural service,” said another colleague.

It has been learned that the doctor had chosen to stay at home where his worsening condition didn't come to the notice of anyone. It was too late before Dr. Devraj could get the right treatment, as he became the 10th doctor in Karnataka to fall prey to COVID-19.

Even the medical education minister K Sudhakar tweeted on Tuesday, lamenting the death of the young doctor. “It’s very unfortunate that Dr Devaraj succumbed to Covid," he wrote.

Karnataka has about 4.12 lakh cases overall after 7866 new cases were reported on Tuesday.
